چکیده

Abstract A simple, stable, and high-sensitivity temperature sensor based on multimode interference in a polymer optical fiber (POF) with higher-order mode excitation has been developed. In single-mode–multimode–single-mode (SMS) structure, one end of the POF physical-contact (PC) connectors is connected to silica single-mode an angled-PC (APC) connector. We compare sensing characteristics three configurations (no PC-APC, PC-APC at input, output) obtain highest sensitivity 219.2 pm °C −1 , which more than double value standard PC-APC) SMS structure.

Strain and temperature sensing based on multimode interference in partially chlorinated polymer optical fibers

We develop strain and temperature sensors based on multimode interference in a partially chlorinated graded-index polymer optical fiber (PCGI-POF) and experimentally investigate their sensing performance at room temperature using incident light of ∼1300 nm wavelength. The length of the PCGI-POF was 0.7m. The measured strain and temperature sensitivities were −4.47 pm/με and +9.66 nm/°C/m, respe...

Single-end-access strain and temperature sensing based on multimodal interference in polymer optical fibers

We develop a single-end-access strain/temperature sensor configuration based on multimodal interference in a polymer optical fiber (POF) with an extremely high sensitivity. The light Fresnel-reflected at the distal open end of the POF is exploited. We obtain high strain and temperature sensitivities of –122.2 pm/με and 10.1 nm/°C, respectively, which are shown to be comparable to those in two-e...

Low-cost high-sensitivity strain and temperature sensing using graded-index multimode fibers.

We report a low-loss, low-cost high-sensitivity all-fiber strain and temperature sensor based on mode interference in graded-index multimode fibers. Blueshifts with strain and temperature sensitivities of 18.6 pm/microstrain and 58.5 pm/ degrees C have been observed. Experimental results show that smaller core diameter graded-index fibers display greater strain-induced peak wavelength shifts th...

Methacrylate-Based Copolymers for Polymer Optical Fibers

Waveguides made of poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) play a major role in the homogeneous distribution of display backlights as a matrix for solid-state dye lasers and polymer optical fibers (POFs). PMMA is favored because of its transparency in the visible spectrum, low price, and well-controlled processability. Nevertheless, technical drawbacks, such as its limited temperature stability, call f...

Long period gratings in multimode optical fibers: application in chemical sensing

We propose and demonstrate a new technique for evanescent wave chemical sensing by writing long period ~ in a bare multimode plastic clad silica tiber. The sensing length of the present sensor is only IQ mm, but is as sensi1iIt; a conventional unclad evanescent wave sensor having about 100 mm sensing length. The minimum measurabkl1! centratioll of the sensor reported here is 10 nmoUl and the op...
